You might think that you’ve been brushing correctly for the entirety of your life. While you may be absolutely right (and a consistently healthy smile is generally a testament to that fact), it’s also possible you’re missing a thing or two! Since our goal is always to keep your oral health safe, while guiding you with the most effective, straightforward suggestions we can give you, we’d like to quickly run through proper brushing. You may find that you’re already right on target (or, you just might learn something new!).
Make Sure Your Timing Is Right
Don’t mess around with your timing! It might not seem like a big deal when you’re working your way through your dental hygiene but this detail can have a significant impact on your oral health. If you brush for too little time, you may miss plaque (and that can lead to decay or gingivitis). When you overdo it, you may aggravate your gums, erode enamel, and damage your smile. Stick to timing your brushing to two minutes (in the morning, then once more at night).
Ensure You Brush Your Entire Smile
Now, make sure that you’re also brushing your whole smile. If you’re spending two minutes on your visible teeth on the front surfaces, you’re missing an awful lot of plaque and debris, which means the majority of your dental tissue is becoming very susceptible to cavities and more! Give all teeth and all surfaces equal attention.
Don’t Forget To Check In On Your Brush
If you’re brushing well but your toothbrush isn’t ideal, you may not be brushing your best. Here’s what you should remember for excellent oral health:
- Only purchase brushes with soft bristles
- Only use each brush for three to four months (then start with a new one)
- Use a brush you find comfortable
