Sharing little smiles is an instant mood-lifter. And even though the first set of teeth eventually fall out to make way for permanent teeth, that doesn’t mean they are expendable. Children’s teeth need the same care as adult teeth, to help them stay healthy through snack times, nap times and plenty of silly fun. Brushing and flossing recommendations remain the same, and our Silver City, NM dental team welcomes children for their twice yearly checkups. A family dentist is experienced in addressing the special needs of little teeth.

Give Them Lots of Healthy Food

Teeth depend on nutritious food to grow strong and stay strong. Plenty of calcium rich foods, and not too many sugary snacks are good places to start. Water is the best round-the-clock beverage, with sodas and fruit juices saved for treats.

Give Them Regular Dental Visits

Settle children into a twice-yearly checkup and cleaning habit, and they will (hopefully) continue that habit for a lifetime. Checkups allow us to thoroughly clean your child’s teeth, as well as to examine their mouth and jaws for any signs of trouble. In addition, regular visits can give an early alert if there are orthodontic issues that need to be watched or addressed immediately.

Fluoride Treatments

Regular checkups are an excellent time for fluoride treatments, to give young teeth an extra boost of enamel-strengthening fluoride.

Dental Sealants

Sealants form a protective layer on the back teeth, to keep food and bacteria from settling in hard-to-reach crevices in molars. Youngsters are not always adept at brushing, and sealants add an extra layer of protection. The safe and nontoxic coating wears away naturally over time.

For Sporty Kids: Consider A Mouthguard

Even the healthiest tooth runs the risk of being jarred loose (or knocked out completely) by an accidental blow to the mouth or jaw. While you can’t prevent every playground encounter, if your child plays organized sports, or participates in activities like skateboarding or mountain biking, a mouthguard is highly recommended.
